Psychotherapy services
I provide individual, person-centered, evidence-based psychotherapy to adults (ages 18+). Treatments provided include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Behavior therapy (e.g., relaxation and mindfulness training, coping skills training, social skills training, exposure therapy)
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
I integrate the best clinical research data in the area of psychotherapy with each patient’s goals, values, and strengths to provide individualized, effective, and culturally responsive treatment.
The treatments listed above attribute human suffering to the way we think about, and interact with, life’s difficulties. Considering the truthfulness and usefulness of our beliefs, approaching instead of avoiding our thoughts and feelings, and learning new strategies to interact with our experiences improves quality of life, reduces suffering, and enables us to move towards a life that is full and meaningful.
Treatment occurs within a therapeutic relationship that is collaborative, empathic, and genuine. Above all, it is characterized by positive regard for all people.
Areas of Expertise
I provide treatment for the full spectrum of psychological challenges, including:
Mood disorders
Stress and trauma-related disorders
Anxiety disorders
I also have expertise in working with individuals who have a serious and/or chronic medical condition (e.g., cancer, organ failure, pre-/post-transplant, HIV/AIDS, other serious illnesses). This work may center around:
Coping with a new medical diagnosis or new phase of illness
Medical symptom self-management (e.g., psychological approaches to insomnia or chronic pain)
Health enhancing behaviors (e.g., improving medication adherence, smoking cessation, relaxation training)
Topics related to end of life, grief, and bereavement
Additionally, I help people manage problems related to our complex lives, including:
Adjustment to life transitions and new stressors
Difficulties due to the lived experiences of anti-LGBTQIA bias, sexism, racism, ableism, ageism, and other forms of discrimination and harassment
What Goals Do Patients Have?
Any goal central to your personal values is an appropriate goal for psychotherapy. Some individuals are focused on symptom reduction (e.g., “If I had fewer symptoms of depression, I could get back to my relationships and work.”), while others are more focused on building new relationships, dating, or finding a new job as their first step in overcoming their challenges.
What is Treatment Like?
During the initial sessions, I will conduct an intake interview and assessment to better understand what life is like for you. Following this, we will identify your goals and create an individualized treatment plan that serves as a road-map to getting where you want to be at the end of treatment. If this seems to be a good fit, then weekly, twice weekly, or every other week sessions will begin. Of course, if your needs change, the treatment plan can also change.
Fees
Like many other mental health practices, Hawthorn Psychological Health is an out-of-network provider. A credit card number must be provided upon scheduling of your first session.
You are encouraged to inquire with your health insurance plan regarding whether they may reimburse part or all your session fees. A monthly superbill (i.e., receipt of services) can be provided to you for this purpose. Please see the Contact page for the No Surprises Act Notice.
If you receive mental health benefits through Lyra, there is no cost to you during your covered sessions.
